Turning Experience Into Evidence: Evidence Into Better Care.
For more than 15 years, we have worked alongside children and families navigating childhood cancer in Kenya. Through this work, we see firsthand the barriers that can prevent children from accessing and completing treatment — from the cost of care and long distances to treatment centres, to gaps in information, accommodation, psychosocial support and continuity of care.
We are committed to documenting what we learn and using evidence to strengthen the way childhood cancer is understood and addressed in Kenya.
Understanding the Reality of Childhood Cancer
Our research and learning focuses on the realities that shape a child’s cancer journey beyond the clinical diagnosis.
We seek to better understand:
Access to treatment: the financial, geographical and systemic barriers that affect timely access to care.
Treatment completion: the factors that contribute to interruptions, delays or abandonment of treatment.
The experience of families: the practical, emotional and social challenges faced by children and their caregivers.
Patient support needs: the resources and services families require to navigate treatment successfully.
The wider childhood cancer system: gaps, opportunities and lessons that can inform better programmes and services.
Research Through Practice
Much of what we learn comes from working directly with families. Our programmes provide an opportunity to identify recurring challenges, document needs and understand what kinds of support make a meaningful difference to children and their caregivers. We use this learning to continuously strengthen our programmes and to contribute evidence and insights to the wider childhood cancer community. Our approach is grounded in the principle that families should not only be recipients of services; their experiences should help shape the services designed for them.
Building Knowledge for Better Outcomes
We aim to strengthen the evidence base around childhood cancer in Kenya by:
Documenting:
Capturing experiences, needs, programme data and emerging trends from the families and communities we serve.
Learning:
Analysing what the evidence tells us about barriers to care and opportunities for improvement.
Collaborating:
Working with healthcare institutions, researchers, universities, cancer organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen knowledge around childhood cancer.
Applying
Using research and programme learning to improve the design, delivery and effectiveness of our interventions.

Research is not separate from our work - it is part of how we learn to do that work better. As HCK grows, we are committed to developing stronger systems for data collection, programme evaluation and research partnerships, while ensuring that the experiences and dignity of children and families remain at the centre of our work. Because better evidence can lead to better decisions. And better decisions can help more children access the care they need.
