Pillar 5: Advocacy

Making sure the voices of children and families are heard.

At Hope for Cancer Kids, we don’t only support children and families through the challenges of cancer — we work to change the systems that create those challenges.

We advocate for policies, funding and healthcare systems that make childhood cancer care more accessible, affordable and responsive to the needs of children and their families.

Bringing lived experience to the table

Our advocacy is informed by the real experiences of children, survivors and caregivers we work with.
We bring these experiences into conversations with government, healthcare institutions, cancer organisations and other stakeholders, helping decisionmakers understand the practical barriers families face; from accessing diagnosis and treatment to financing care and supporting children after treatment.

Working with policymakers

HCK participates in national and sector-wide discussions on childhood cancer and cancer care.
Through our leadership and representation in cancer networks and technical working groups, we contribute to conversations around childhood cancer, prevention, screening and early detection, health financing and survivorship.
Our team also participates in wider national and international forums where childhood cancer priorities, health systems and patient-centred care are discussed. HCK's work has included engagement with the National Cancer Control Program and other stakeholders working to strengthen cancer care in Kenya.

Advocacy through collaboration

We believe lasting change requires collaboration. We work alongside organisations including the Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO), Kenyatta National Hospital, the National Cancer Control Program, the National Cancer Institute of Kenya, Childhood Cancer International and other partners to keep childhood cancer on the agenda and strengthen the systems supporting children and families.

What are we advocating for?

Our advocacy focuses on practical changes that can improve the childhood cancer journey:
Affordable access to diagnosis and treatment
Health financing that protects families from financial hardship
Earlier diagnosis and referral
Access to essential medicines and services
Better support for children and caregivers throughout treatment
Recognition and support for childhood cancer survivors
Policies that reflect the lived experiences of children and families

Help Us Influence Change

Policy change takes evidence, relationships and persistent advocacy. If you are a policymaker, healthcare professional, researcher, organisation or individual who would like to support stronger childhood cancer care in Kenya, we would love to hear from you.
