  1. Who can register as an NHIF member?

Employers- if you have or more employees and your company is legally registered, then you and your employee(s) must register with NHIF

Individuals- anyone aged eighteen (18) and above living in Kenya. Please note that there is no upper age limit

Organized group members- these include self-help groups, chamas, welfare associations, community based groups, SACCOs etc

  • Employers
  • Fill in an NHIF33 application form
  • Attach a copy of company registration certificate
  • Attach a copy of company P.I.N certificate
  • Payroll byproduct in Microsoft Excel format
  • Submit application package to an NHIF office near you
  • Individuals
  • Fill in an NHIF2 application form
  • Attach a passport size photo of each contributor, spouse, and dependants
  • Attach a copy of birth certificate for each declared child. Birth notification for children under six (6) months old is acceptable
  • Attach photocopies of identification cards for contributor and spouse
  • Submit application package to an NHIF office near you
  • All employees are individually responsible for registering themselves and their dependants with NHIF
  • Individuals and members of organized groups please include a three months’ prepayment
  • For new members, there is a 60 days waiting period before accessing benefits

  • Proposal for NHIF on nature of Group’s work and how the group intends to work with NHIF
  • Submit application package to an NHIF office near you
  • All forms are available at NHIF offices as well as on the NHIF website (nhif.or.ke )

  • After retirement or job loss
  • Fill in an amendment form requesting for change of employment status from employed to non/ self-employed
  • Present a three months’ prepayment
  • Submit application package to an NHIF office near you
  • On job resumption
  • Fill in an amendment form requesting for change of employment status from non/ self-employed to employed
  • Present a letter of introduction from current employer
  • Submit amendment package to an NHIF office near you
  1. Current benefits of being an NHIF member
  • Upon admission in hospital an NHIF member is accorded services and the hospital makes a claim to the Fund for reimbursement
  • The in-patient package covers the contributor, declared spouse and child(ren)
  • Provides comprehensive medical cover in majority of government facilities and mission health providers
  • Provides in-patient services in private and high cost hospitals on a co-payment basis
  1. Advantages of being an NHIF member
  • No discrimination against age, diseases or family size whatsoever
  • Comprehensive in-patient cover applicable at Government hospitals only including maternity packages for both normal & caesarian deliveries
  • Comprehensive in-patient cover applicable at mission hospitals for non-surgical cases only
  • At private hospitals, NHIF pays the daily rebate and patient pays the difference
  • Renal dialysis packages available at Kenyatta & Moi Referral Hospitals
  • Family planning- Vasectomy and Tubal Ligation covered
  • Our comprehensive in-patient package covers bed rest, medication, doctor’s fee, surgical and other medical procedures in general
